Oxygen, in turn, damages cell membranes as a result of radical chemical processes, which can contribute to the development of cardiovascular or even cancer. Vitamin E is involved in these chemical processes and protects cells, so this vitamin is called an antioxidant. Free radicals in the body are more likely to occur from smoking, exposure to polluted air, or high ultraviolet radiation levels.
Due to its antioxidant properties, vitamin E is also used in dermatology – for local skin application.
