Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Is a “Reflection of The Contemporary World,” Karlie Kloss Says
The former Victoria Secret model Karlie Kloss said that the cancellation of the legendary Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a “reflection of the contemporary world.”
Appearing on “Today,” the supermodel has supported the decision of the luxury lingerie brand owners, L Brands, to call off the show this year. In her opinion, the consumers nowadays demand that brands are “inclusionary and body positive.”
It reflects the world we live in, Kloss added, highlighting that fashion labels need to evolve to meet the consumers’ expectations.
The 27-year-old Kloss left the brand three years ago to pursue a career as a TV host. She replaced Heidi Klum as a host of the “Project Runway.”
She admitted that the regular TV appearances have made her more confident, and she enjoyed her new role.
Karlie Kloss also reflected on her decision to stop working with Victoria’s Secret. In her words, she no longer felt well to represent the brand as it did not mirror her personality. The blonde beauty asserted she was no longer sure whether she was sending the right kind of message to the hundreds of young girls watching the show.
The annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured leading supermodels such as Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Bella and Gigi Hadid, and more.
Over the past few years, the show has seen a severe decline in viewership. Last year, 3.3 million people watched it, down from 9.7 million in 2013.
Last month, L Brands officially confirmed that the televised fashion show famous for its jewel-encrusted bras and models wearing angel wings, will not be held this festive season. It has aired annually around Christmas since 1995.
In an internal memo, CEO Les Wexner said that the company no longer thinks that ”network television” is the right fit for the show.
Next to the slumping sales and viewership, Victoria’s Secret has witnessed a string of controversies lately.
Leslie Wexner has come under public scrutiny for his friendship with the disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein. In addition to that, in August, Victoria’s Secret’s long-term chief marketing officers departed from the company.
In a heavily-criticized interview with Vogue last year, Razek opined that the brand should not feature transgender or plus-sized models as ”the show is a fantasy.” At the same time his resignation was announced, Victoria Secret signed its first contract with a transgender model.
