Space Channel 5, The Most Recent Game To Movie Adaptation From Sega And Picturestart, Is Now A Part Of The Comix Zone Family

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Sega will collaborate with Picturestart to adapt these two works. The comedy-drama Cha Cha Smooth, released in 2022, was produced by Picturestart. After Sonic the Hedgehog’s commercial success, it appears that Sega is exploring other IPs that could be adapted into motion pictures. Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel, both produced by Sonic the Hedgehog’s creator Toru Nakahara, will serve as the basis for future Sega films.

The adaption of Space Channel 5 will be called Channel 5. The comedy’s plot revolves around a fast-food employee who receives a call from a reporter from the future asking for his assistance in stopping an alien invasion. The power of viral dance will, of course, be used to achieve this. With the addition of Sega game director Takumi Yoshinaga, Channel 5 is being written by Barry Battles and Nir Pantry.

Another video game by Sega, Comix Zone, is being adapted into a movie. Since the live-action Sonic, the Hedgehog movie in 2020, and its follow-up this year were such great commercial hits, the revelation that Sega is creating future cinematic adaptations of famous games is not surprising. With a roughly $90 million budget, the first Sonic the Hedgehog made over $319 million in revenue. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which had an even higher revenue of $402.4 million, was even more successful. Currently set for a December 2024 theatrical release is the third movie, simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The zone will be the name of Comix Zone’s adaptation. In this film, a black queer writer of color and a comic book creator is drawn into the same story. The two will then need to cooperate to stop a supervillain from causing havoc. Kagasei Shimomura, a producer for Sega, will collaborate with Mae Catt on Zone’s writing.
