In an interview with the British GQ magazine, Elton John has said that the remake of The Lion King was a “huge disappointment.”
The Rocket Man singer was heavily involved in the original 1994 animation, co-writing its soundtrack, which included songs such as Circle of Life, I Just Can’t-Wait To Be King, and Can You Feel The Love Tonight.
In 1995, Elton John won an Oscar award for The Lion King’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
The 72-year-old singer was invited to take part in the remake as well, and he reworked some of the soundtracks. Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice authored a new song, ”Never Too Late,” to the 2019 version of the movie.
As the singer admitted himself, his experience with the movie was different this time.
The updated, photo-realistic version of The Lion King was a considerable disappointment, Elton John told GQ, highlighting that the creative team ”messed the music up.”
The magic and joy were lost, the Academy Award winner added, pointing out that the music in the remake did not have the same impact.
Despite the massive box office success, The Lion King soundtrack fell out of the charts quickly, while 25 years ago, it was the best selling album of the year, John emphasized.
In addition to that, Elton John also said he wished he had been involved more in the project as the singer felt he was not treated with the same level of respect this time. It made me feel extremely sad, John concluded.
However, he admitted he was happy that “the right spirit” for The Lion King continues to thrive on Broadway. The stage version he is also actively involved in continues to play to sold-out audiences after more than 9,000 performances.
Disney’s remake of The Lion King has generated USD 1.3 billion in revenues, officially beating out Frozen’s USD 1.27 billion at the international box office to become the top-grossing animated film of all time.
Despite its impressive box office, the reviews of the movie were mixed. Beyonce unveiled a tie-in album the same day as the film’s release, which scored higher with the critics.
Slate opined the Queen B’s album was far better than the movie highlighting it as ”the event the film wishes it could be,” It also added that the music worked better if you forgot the remake even existed.
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with Elton John’s opinion that the remake of The Lion King was a disappointment?
