Television shows come and go. Some slither away in the dark of the night, to eventually forgotten, and then others genuinely stand the test of time. After 30 years, Seinfeld has been one of the few to really stand up to the passage of time. But one has to wonder how did a show about nothing resonate as it has.
Fox News sat down with actor and series alum Patrick Warburton, who portrayed series fan favorite Putty, and he had an interesting take on the age-old question of the series endurance. Warburton offered that it was possible that the manner in which the show was executed, couple with Jerry Seinfeld’s own perspective on comedy, played into something that everybody can not only relate to but loves. Whichever it may be, the series had an innate ability to capture the viewer’s attention, even to this day 30 years later.
Warburton went on the say that the characters, the four friends of the series, were people that viewers could relate to. They discussed and took to task the days social issues and even uncomfortable issues, using their own shared phraseology.
As for Warburton, the 54-year-old actor joined the cast in season 6, portraying Elaine’s on again, off again boyfriend, David Putty. There is no denying the fact that from the moment he appeared on screen, he pretty much imprinted himself on the sitcom. With his deep voice and somewhat towering height—it was a given that Elaine would find herself undeniably attracted to Puddy’s masculine presence.
Warburton said of his character: “He’s definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed I always wondered what Puddy and Elaine were doing together,” he stated jokingly. Warburton chalked it up to the fact that the love between them was pretty real because honestly, Puddy didn’t bring much to the relationship in the form of conversation.
Although it is undeniable that his role of Puddy on Seinfeld is his most notable and recognizable role, Warburton had been making his mark on Hollywood. With characters in such features as “Rules of Engagement,” “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “Men in Black II,” and “Get Smart,” the actor seems to keep himself busy. However, at this moment, Warburton is the face of National Car Rental and states that it has all been decades in the making. He went on to credit his working on films that were low-budget in his younger years as helping to harden his performance and passion for his craft.
