A group of thirty Democrats in the House requests that Biden consider relinquishing his given authority to launch nuclear weapons.
In a letter sent by the representing group on Tuesday to Biden and released and publicized on Wednesday of last week, 31 individuals in the House urged Biden to: “consider modifying the decision-making process the United States uses in its command and control of nuclear forces.”
The letter went on to state: “As president, two of your most critical and solemn duties are the security of the country and the safeguarding of its nuclear arsenal. However, vesting one person with this authority entails real risks.”
The primary democrats spearheaded the letter, Rep. Jimmy Panetta and Rep. Ted Lieu, referenced former President Trump’s all too public feud with Kim Jong Un—North Korea leader. “Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”
The California democrats offered up a number of options in terms of possible alternatives. One was, if the president so chooses to order a nuclear strike, that both the vice president and the speaker of the House of Representatives would have to agree and concur with the decision.
Yet another option would involve the certification that the strike was valid, from the secretary of defense, along with the attesting to its legality by the attorney general. There was also the suggestion by the democrats that a Congressional declaration of war be issued, along with specific Congressional approval of the strike.
The final option suggested was the creation of a permanent Congressional council with the leaders regularly holding deliberations with the president as well as their administration on issues of national security. The consultation of this council would be required before the launching of any nuclear weapon or weapons.
One section of the letter stated: “While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so. The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war.”
Is this really a precedent that the Democrats want to make? Will it make our nation vulnerable?
